Spencerian Kit

For those just starting out with calligraphy, a calligraphy kit makes a wonderful gift. We’ve carefully curated kits for several different calligraphic hands, and we have collections from some of our favorite brands as well. Whether your beginning calligrapher prefers nibs and ink or fountain pens, we have several outstanding options.

And if it’s markers you desire to use for lettering, we have sets of broad edge markers, brush markers, and monoline markers, as well as both a Sakura and Zig set that have a wide variety of markers, that make perfect Christmas gifts!

Sakura Pigma Collection

The Christmas season is a wonderful time to expand your library. A few staples that we would recommend for various styles of calligraphy are Foundations of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters, Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy  by Eleanor Winters, Italic Letters by Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty, Learning to Write Spencerian Script by Michael and Debra Sull, Modern Calligraphy by Molly Suber Thorpe,  The Zanerian Manual,  and the Speedball Textbook. We also offer excellent instructional dvds by Reggie Ezell, Ron Tate, Bill Lilly and Rosemary Buczek.

For those adding to their calligraphy tool collection, pen holders are always an excellent investment. We work with many talented artisans to provide a variety of options. Though it’s impossible to pick just one favorite, here are some of our best recommendations.

Hourglass Adjustable Oblique

The adjustable hourglass oblique holder remains one of our most popular. Fitted with a bullock flange, this holder is adaptable for the widest variety of pointed pen nibs. It will even hold some styles of crowquill nibs.  Further, it’s available in a left handed version as well.

5/8 Century Oblique

Another tried and true favorite is the 5/8 Turn of the Century oblique holder. Customers love this particular holder because the grip is slightly thicker than most standard holders, making it easier to hold. Because it is handcrafted, each holder will look slightly different.

Pocket Scribbler

With the release of our new catalog, we have several new pen holders created by Ink Slinger Pen Company. We simply could not decide on one favorite. In particular, we love the new Pocket Scribblers. These tiny holders fit well in your purse or pocket, and are fun to use for lettering on-site.  Available in four colors, you’re sure to find one that suits your fancy.

Trivium Oblique

Coupled Carrot

Additionally, Ink Slinger developed the Coupled Carrot Oblique and the Trivium Oblique. These two gorgeous holders combine a variety of woods for a stunning effect. They are both handsome and affordable. Both also have a straight holder equivalent for left-handed calligraphers or those who specialize in broad edge.

Along with a good holder, nibs and inks are crucial. The right nib is truly a personal preference, and we offer two samplers that allow you to try a variety of options to find what works for you. The copperplate sampler offers twenty-five of our most popular pointed pen nibs, and the broad edge and monoline sampler offers a wide range of nibs for broad edge and monoline styles. And while we don’t have an ink sampler, we have a wide range of inks to choose from. For more on which inks and nibs to choose, please reference our archives where we give more information on getting started in pointed pen calligraphybroad edge calligraphy, or modern calligraphy. Those guides also mention books and dvds that are helpful for starting your journey!

For the times when nibs and ink or markers just won’t do, fountain pens serve as an excellent alternative. (Plus they make excellent stocking stuffers!) This year’s newest release comes from Speedball. Specifically created for calligraphy, their fountain pens come in 1.1mm, 1.5 mm, 1.9mm or a set that includes all three. William Mitchell, another industry standard in calligraphy tools, also released a new fountain pen set this year. Either of these choices will provide the recipient with a smooth writing experience.

Pilot MR

For every day writing, Pilot offers a plethora of options. The new Pilot MR pens are simply fabulous! These stylish pens are eye- catching and write quite nicely.  There is also the added convenience of being able to use the same cartridges in all three refillable Pilot pens (Parallel Pens, MR pens, and the Plumix). If you prefer a fountain pen that can be tossed in the trash once the ink runs out, the Pilot Varsity pens are for you. Inexpensive and easy to use, these pens come in great colors.

Sterling Promise Necklace

If wearable gifts are more your style, we offer two fantastic choices. First and foremost, the Sterling Promise Necklace designed by Kathy Milici is an elegant, upscale statement piece. It is ideal for those who love both calligraphy and fine jewelry. For a more casual, fun statement, the new Live Life with a Flourish t-shirt line designed by our very own Steve Sloss is a great way to show your love of calligraphy. Available in both short sleeves or long sleeves.

Of course we have many more items to choose from as you do your Christmas shopping or make your own wish list. There are simply too many favorites to include them all, but we did want to give you an overview. If you find you have questions or need guidance, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We are always happy to help!
